Osteoporosis is one of the most common diseases of the skeletal system and often remains undetected for a long time. Early diagnosis is crucial in order to minimize the risk of bone fractures and maintain quality of life. Bone density measurement offers a reliable way to assess the condition of the bones and initiate treatment to strengthen them at an early stage. At our private radiology practice in Düsseldorf, we provide you with a precise and gentle examination.
What is a bone density measurement?
Osteodensitometry is a medical procedure used to determine bone density. It measures how much mineral content – particularly calcium – is present in the bones. The results provide information about whether the bones are sufficiently stable or whether there are signs of osteoporosis (bone loss).
Why is osteodensitometry so important?
With increasing age or due to certain risk factors, bone density decreases. This increases the risk of bone fractures – particularly in the spine, hip or wrist. An early measurement can identify risks and allow appropriate treatment to stabilize the bones to be initiated.

Bone density measurement in Düsseldorf:
What happens during the examination?
At our private radiology practice and preventive care center in Düsseldorf, we use DXA technology (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) and the Lunar Prodigy system from GE Healthcare. It is one of the leading systems for precise, fast and low-radiation bone density measurements.
The examination is performed as follows:
Preparation
We recommend wearing loose clothing without metal parts on the day of the examination. You lie comfortably on our examination table.
Measurement
While you are lying down, the measuring arm of the device slowly moves over different areas of your body. The system emits low-dose X-rays, which are absorbed to different degrees by your bones and the surrounding tissue. Based on these measurements, the device calculates your exact bone density.
The entire process takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes. The examination is painless and does not place any physical strain on you.
Results
The device provides precise T-scores and visual representations that allow us to assess your bone health and, if applicable, the degree of osteoporosis.
Who should consider a bone density measurement?
- Women aged 50 and over (postmenopausal)
- Men aged 70 and over
- People with a family history of osteoporosis
- People who take cortisone or other medications that may damage the bones over a prolonged period
- People who have suffered bone fractures following minor incidents (e.g. a slight fall)
- People with chronic conditions such as rheumatism, diabetes or kidney damage
- People who are underweight or malnourished
- Smokers
- People with a sedentary lifestyle
- Women and men who notice signs such as back pain or loss of height
