What is heart MRI?
Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging is an imaging procedure that provides high-resolution and detailed images of your heart. Magnetic fields and radio waves produce cross-sectional images of the heart muscle, heart valves and surrounding blood vessels. These images allow us to assess your heart function, blood flow and the condition of the tissue structures. Unlike X-rays or CT, this method is completely free of ionizing radiation.

What happens during the examination?
For heart MRI, we use the MAGNETOM® Skyra from Siemens Healthineers. This state-of-the-art 3-Tesla MRI scanner provides extremely detailed images that can visualize even the smallest changes in heart tissue. The innovative technology enables precise examinations while providing plenty of space thanks to the wider scanner opening and shorter scan times.
Cardiac MRI is performed as follows:
Preparation
Before the examination, we ask you to remove metallic objects such as jewelry or clothing containing metal parts. You then lie comfortably on the examination table. Depending on the indication, we may administer a contrast agent through a vein in your arm. This can make certain structures or areas of blood flow more clearly visible.
Examination
We then slowly move the examination table into the wide opening of the scanner. In the next step, the MRI scanner produces high-resolution images of your heart from different angles. The examination usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes.
After the examination
Once the examination is complete, you can move normally again immediately. If you have received a contrast agent, please drink plenty of water to help your body eliminate it more quickly. We carefully evaluate the images.
When is heart MRI necessary?
Typical conditions that can be examined with cardiac MRI include:
- Inflammation such as myocarditis and pericarditis
- Heart muscle diseases such as dilated or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
- Storage diseases such as amyloidosis, hemochromatosis or Fabry disease
- Systemic diseases affecting the heart such as sarcoidosis or rheumatological diseases
- Circulatory disorders, blood clots and vascular diseases
- Congenital or acquired heart defects such as atrial septal defects or ventricular septal defects
- Scarring and damaged tissue, for example after a heart attack
- Masses (tumors of the heart)
