What is whole-body MRI?
This imaging procedure allows us to examine your entire body in detail. Using a strong magnetic field and radio waves, high-resolution cross-sectional images of your internal organs, tissues, muscles and joints are produced. These precise images make it possible to detect potential pathological changes at an early stage – such as heart and vascular problems, inflammation, musculoskeletal disorders or tumors.
Unlike other procedures such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging works entirely without ionizing radiation. This makes the procedure particularly gentle. Because this special MRI examination provides a comprehensive overview of the health of the entire body, it is particularly suitable for prevention, but of course also for diagnostics in patients with specific medical questions.
What does whole-body MRI show?
The examination does not merely provide snapshots of individual areas of the body, but also makes connections throughout the entire body visible. It shows whether structures are working together harmoniously, where abnormalities occur and whether risk factors are present.
Magnetic resonance imaging can visualize the following areas of the body:
1. Internal organs
Whole-body MRI allows detailed imaging of almost all internal organs. The liver, kidneys and adrenal glands, spleen, pancreas and urinary bladder can be assessed particularly well.
In the liver, for example, changes such as cysts, benign tumors or inflammatory processes can be detected. We can reliably examine the kidneys for stones, masses or circulatory disorders. The spleen, pancreas and adrenal glands are also displayed at high resolution, allowing potential enlargements, inflammatory changes or other abnormal structures to be detected at an early stage.
The urinary bladder is also assessed as part of the examination, for example with regard to changes in the bladder wall, inflammatory processes and the ability to empty completely.
Depending on the medical question and the examination protocol selected, it is also possible to visualize the heart (e.g. size, shape and position) and the lungs (e.g. tissue changes and masses) using specially developed sequences.
For further clarification, we also offer more detailed specialist examinations
2. Lymphatic system
The lymphatic system frequently reflects pathological processes, for example in cases of infections, chronic inflammation or malignant diseases. Whole-body MRI allows lymph nodes throughout the body to be reliably visualized and assessed for changes.
Imaging is particularly important when lymph nodes are enlarged or unexplained symptoms are present. Magnetic resonance imaging helps distinguish between harmless reactive changes – for example following an infection – and abnormal findings that require treatment.
Assessing the lymphatic system is also crucial when searching for tumors or during cancer follow-up, as enlarged or structurally altered lymph nodes may indicate possible spread.
3. Blood vessels
Whole-body MRI also enables detailed visualization of the major blood vessels. These include the aorta, the pelvic arteries and the carotid arteries, which supply the brain with blood.
The examination is used to identify possible vascular dilatations (aneurysms), narrowing (stenoses) or other vascular changes. These conditions often remain unnoticed for a long time, but can lead to serious complications as they progress – such as circulatory disorders, embolisms or, in the worst case, rupture of a blood vessel.
If we detect abnormalities during whole-body MRI, they can be examined in greater detail using whole-body angiography at our practice in Düsseldorf.
4. Spine and spinal cord
Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging shows the entire spine – from the cervical spine through the thoracic spine to the lumbar spine. It allows us to assess not only the vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs, but also the spinal canal and the spinal cord running through it.
Typical findings include herniated discs, degenerative changes and osteoarthritis of the facet joints. MRI can also reveal subtle changes long before the first symptoms such as pain or restricted mobility occur.
Particularly in patients with unexplained back problems or neurological symptoms, MRI provides important information and supports further targeted assessment or treatment.
Even more detailed results in this area can be obtained with a specialized MRI of the spine.
5. Joints and bones
The skeletal system is also comprehensively visualized as part of whole-body MRI – including the major joints such as the shoulders, hips, knees and ankles.
The examination makes it possible to detect structural changes such as cartilage wear, joint inflammation (arthritis), loose bodies within the joint or fluid accumulation. In addition, pathological changes in the bones – such as edema, cysts or processes suspicious for tumors – can be identified.
Whole-body MRI is therefore particularly helpful in assessing chronic joint problems, pain in different locations with an unclear cause or for evaluating physical strain. Early degenerative changes can also be reliably identified.
6. Muscles and soft tissues
The muscles and surrounding soft tissues are also displayed at high resolution during this comprehensive examination. This makes it possible to diagnose muscle injuries, tendon irritation, inflammatory changes or fluid accumulation – even when they are not yet visible or noticeable externally.
In addition, we can assess masses, tissue hardening or unexplained swelling in the soft tissues – an important aspect in patients with unexplained symptoms or during follow-up after previous illnesses or procedures.
Whole-body MRI in Düsseldorf:
What happens during the examination?
For this comprehensive and efficient examination, we use the MAGNETOM® Skyra MRI scanner from Siemens Healthineers. The scanner enables particularly detailed images and can visualize even the smallest changes in the body. The examination offers a high level of comfort because the scanner has a spacious opening with a diameter of 70 cm. This makes MRI comfortable even for people with claustrophobia or a larger body build. Another advantage is that the examination time is shorter compared with other MRI techniques.
Whole-body MRI is performed as follows:
Preparation
Before the examination, please remove metallic objects such as jewelry, watches and piercings, as the scanner operates using a strong magnetic field. You then lie comfortably on our padded examination table, which we slowly move into the wide opening of the scanner.
Examination
The scanner then scans your body and visualizes the condition of your organs, muscles, joints and tissues. This process takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
After the examination
Once the MRI examination is complete, you can go home. We carefully evaluate the images.
When is whole-body MRI used?
At our private radiology practice in Düsseldorf, we use whole-body MRI not only to investigate specific symptoms, but also as a precise procedure as part of a comprehensive health check-up.
The aim of this examination is to detect pathological changes at an early stage, even before the first symptoms occur. MRI provides a detailed overview of the entire body: organs, blood vessels, lymph nodes, spine, joints, muscles and soft tissues are visualized painlessly, without radiation and at high resolution.
Regular physical activity strengthens health – but intensive or one-sided strain can also lead to wear-related changes. For physically active people, whole-body MRI at our practice in Düsseldorf therefore offers an effective way to have the entire body examined comprehensively and in detail.
The focus is on the joints, muscles, tendons, spine and connective tissue. MRI makes it possible to detect early damage or overload reactions before they develop into serious injuries. This allows training plans to be adjusted if necessary and can significantly reduce the risk of long-term problems or breaks from sport.
Following treatment for a complex illness – for example in the field of oncology, inflammation or systemic disease – follow-up plays a central role. It is important to detect possible relapses, long-term effects or new signs of disease before noticeable symptoms occur and to closely monitor the further course.
Whole-body MRI provides clarity about the current state of health, supports follow-up monitoring and provides a sound basis for medical decisions.
Whole-body MRI has also proven particularly useful for the early detection of cancer. High-resolution imaging allows us to detect even the smallest tumor lesions or unclear tissue changes at an early stage.
The examination is particularly suitable for people with a family history or individual risk factors such as smoking, persistent stress or environmental exposure. It also makes an important contribution to monitoring health during oncological follow-up.
e.g. chronic pain, fatigue, unexplained weight loss
Whole-body MRI is also helpful when previous examinations have failed to identify a clear cause of physical symptoms. Particularly in patients with non-specific symptoms such as chronic pain, persistent fatigue or unexplained weight loss, magnetic resonance imaging can help reveal hidden disease processes.
By comprehensively visualizing all important structures, we can identify possible causes that may be difficult to detect using conventional procedures.
Whole-body MRI: overview of applications
- As a preventive examination / for a general health check-up
- For athletes and active people, e.g. to detect damage at an early stage
- For diagnostics in patients with unexplained symptoms (e.g. chronic pain, fatigue, unexplained weight loss)
- For follow-up after certain illnesses
Whole-body MRI in Düsseldorf: straightforward health monitoring for people with limited time
People with demanding professional commitments and busy schedules often have little opportunity in everyday life to regularly take care of their own health. Preventive examinations or comprehensive check-ups are therefore often postponed.
However, this can have consequences: even a single unnoticed risk factor can have serious long-term effects. People who forgo regular health checks due to a lack of time run the risk of only noticing pathological changes once they have already progressed – when early and straightforward treatment may no longer be possible.
In such cases, whole-body MRI offers a time-saving yet reliable way to obtain a comprehensive picture of your current state of health in a single examination.
The examination is ideal for anyone who would like to identify risks at an early stage and take preventive action without having to attend several appointments.
