What is head MRI?

This form of magnetic resonance imaging uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of your head. Unlike X-rays or CT, MRI does not use ionizing radiation, making it a particularly gentle examination. It produces high-resolution images of the brain, blood vessels, nerves and other structures such as the eye sockets and paranasal sinuses.

Which structures in the head can MRI visualize?

Brain and nervous tissue

Head MRI provides particularly precise visualization of the brain and its important structures. This allows both large regions and small details to be assessed reliably.

These include, for example:

  • the different lobes of the cerebrum and the cerebral cortex
  • central structures such as the brainstem, cerebellum, basal ganglia and thalamus
  • the ventricular system with its fluid-filled spaces in which cerebrospinal fluid circulates
  • the gray and white matter of the brain – the areas in which nerve cells and nerve pathways perform their functions

This enables us to assess the organization of the brain in great detail.

Skull bones and surrounding structures

Imaging also allows us to assess the bony and adjacent structures of the head.

Particularly clearly visible are:

  • the skull bones and base of the skull
  • the eye sockets and their structures
  • the paranasal sinuses
  • if required, adjacent areas of the upper neck, such as the first cervical vertebrae, major blood vessels or lymph nodes

This provides a comprehensive picture not only of the internal structures of the brain but also of the adjacent bones and soft tissues. The different regions of the head can therefore be clearly visualized in relation to one another.

Blood vessels in the head

Our specialized MRI techniques also enable detailed visualization of the blood vessels in the head.

Structures that can be identified include:

  • the major arteries that supply the brain with oxygen
  • the venous sinuses (sinus venosus) and larger veins
  • the course of the blood vessels and their branches into smaller structures

In this way, head MRI provides us with a precise view of the vascular network within the brain and its anatomical course.

If required, we also offer whole-body angiography as an alternative or complementary examination.

What happens during the examination?

The MRI scan is performed in several steps and is straightforward and painless for you. For the examination, we use the MAGNETOM® Skyra from Siemens Healthineers. The scanner combines state-of-the-art technology with a patient-friendly design. Its wide 70 cm opening creates a comfortable sense of space. At the same time, the system provides highly precise, sharp images with shorter examination times than many other MRI scanners. Noise-reduction technology makes the examination even more comfortable.

Preparation

Before the examination, please remove metallic objects such as jewelry, watches, hairpins and piercings. These could interfere with the magnetic field and affect image quality. If a contrast agent is required, we will discuss this with you beforehand and check for possible intolerances.

Examination

You lie comfortably on the examination table, which we slowly move into the MRI scanner. To prevent movement, we position your head using a special cushion. This is important because even very small movements can affect image quality and therefore the examination results. The scanner then scans your head and produces high-resolution images. The examination generally takes 20 to 30 minutes.

After the examination

Once the MRI examination is complete, you can immediately return to your usual daily activities. If a contrast agent has been used, it is generally eliminated quickly by the body. We then carefully evaluate the images.

When is head MRI used?

Pressure and pain in the head can have many different causes. Often, the symptoms are not caused by a serious condition and may simply be related to dehydration, muscle tension or sensitivity to changes in the weather.

If headaches persist for a longer period, recur frequently or change in character, a head MRI may be important. The examination helps investigate possible causes and reliably rule out serious diseases. These include, for example, vascular changes, inflammation, diseases of the nervous system or a tumor.

Head MRI is also useful in patients with migraines. Although MRI does not show the migraine itself, it can help rule out other causes of the symptoms, such as structural abnormalities in the brain.

If balance suddenly deteriorates, episodes of dizziness occur repeatedly or even lead to loss of consciousness, further examination is important. Head MRI can help identify or rule out causes within the brain.

Possible causes include circulatory disorders, minor strokes or changes in the region of the brain responsible for balance. Vascular narrowing that impairs the blood supply to the brain or inflammation that places pressure on affected structures may also provide an explanation.

Head MRI also plays a central role in stroke diagnostics. It allows circulatory disorders in the brain to be visualized very precisely – often at an early stage. This enables us to determine whether a particular region of the brain is receiving insufficient blood and oxygen.

Magnetic resonance imaging can also visualize a stroke that has already occurred. Depending on the imaging technique, both recent circulatory disorders and older consequences can be detected. In this way, we can precisely determine the location and extent of the affected area.

In addition, the examination provides important information about vascular narrowing or vascular dilatations (aneurysms), which can increase the risk of stroke. This form of radiological imaging therefore supports not only diagnosis in acute cases, but also prevention and follow-up.

Head MRI is one of the most important procedures for visualizing space-occupying changes in the brain, known as masses. These include tumors – benign or malignant tissue growths – whose size, location and extent can be assessed precisely with the examination. This allows us to determine whether sensitive areas of the brain are affected and which treatment options may be considered.

Metastases, meaning secondary tumors originating from cancers elsewhere in the body, can also be reliably detected using magnetic resonance imaging. This allows us to determine whether an existing cancer has already spread to the brain.

Head MRI can also reveal other space-occupying changes such as cysts, abscesses or bleeding that may place pressure on surrounding tissue.

Inflammatory changes in the head can also have different causes. Based on symptoms alone, they are often difficult to classify. Head MRI can help provide clarity.

Conditions that can be visualized include inflammation of the meninges (meningitis) or inflammation of the brain (encephalitis). Chronic inflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis can also be identified by characteristic changes in nervous tissue.

After accidents or falls, it is often important to determine whether internal structures have been affected in addition to external injuries. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head can help visualize damage within the skull region.

Bone fractures are generally best detected using CT. MRI complements this examination by showing whether soft tissues, blood vessels or the brain itself have also been affected. Bleeding, swelling or injuries to nervous tissue can therefore be assessed precisely.

Particularly in complex skull injuries or unexplained symptoms following an accident, head MRI provides comprehensive diagnostic information.

The examination is also an important procedure for investigating the causes of epileptic seizures and other neurological symptoms in greater detail. It can reveal changes that influence the electrical activity of the brain, such as scar tissue, small vascular changes or consequences of previous injuries.

Head MRI also provides important information in other diseases of the nervous system. It can visualize typical changes associated with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease and can help distinguish Parkinson’s disease from other causes with similar symptoms. Imaging also enables more precise investigation of unexplained movement and sensory disorders.

The examination is also particularly suitable for visualizing blood vessels in the brain. Using specialized imaging techniques at our private radiology practice in Düsseldorf, the arteries and veins in the head can be displayed in detail.

This allows us to identify, among other findings, vascular narrowing (stenoses), which can increase the risk of circulatory disorders or strokes. We can also detect aneurysms – dilatations of the vessel wall that, in the worst case, can lead to bleeding.

If blurred vision, visual field defects or double vision occur, magnetic resonance imaging of the head can help identify the cause. The examination allows us to assess structures such as the visual pathways, optic nerve and the areas of the brain responsible for vision. This enables us to determine whether changes in the brain, nerves or surrounding structures are causing the symptoms.

MRI also plays an important role in patients with hearing disorders or tinnitus. It can visualize the auditory nerve and auditory pathway and can detect tumors in the internal auditory canal, such as an acoustic neuroma, as well as other changes.

In these cases, MRI shows in detail how the individual structures of the brain have developed and whether there are deviations from normal anatomy.

It can visualize, for example, malformations of the cerebral cortex, abnormalities in the development of nerve pathways or changes in the ventricular system. Such findings may provide information about the causes of developmental delays, learning difficulties or seizure disorders.

Thanks to the high resolution of MRI images, even very small differences in the tissue can be detected.
