Everything about modern preventive diagnostics

Welcome to our blog! With Radiology News, we keep you informed about current developments in preventive healthcare. We explain how imaging procedures can contribute to prevention and provide insights into their many possibilities. Our aim is to make radiology understandable and accessible. We address people who want to actively protect their health or who have particular risk factors.

Why preventive healthcare is so important

Good health cannot be taken for granted. It is valuable, and we often become fully aware of this only when something is wrong. Preventive care helps identify risks at an early stage and gives you a better understanding of your own body.

Radiological procedures can make an important contribution: they provide reassurance, reveal connections and, ideally, allow action to be taken before symptoms develop.

Radiology as a useful addition to conventional check-ups

Regular medical check-ups are an important part of preventive healthcare. Blood tests, ECG, ultrasound and other examinations provide valuable information about the current state of the body and help detect disease.

Radiological procedures complement these basic diagnostics in a distinctive way: they can show what blood values or ultrasound alone cannot reveal – changes that may not yet cause symptoms but can still be relevant to health. Radiological prevention therefore provides not only snapshots but also comprehensive insights into the structure and function of the body.

Combined with conventional preventive examinations, this can create a more complete picture of health. Radiology can add information where other procedures reach their limits and provide a basis for well-founded, individualized medical decisions.

Radiological check-ups: comprehensive imaging from head to toe

Preventive care using imaging procedures offers many possibilities for examining specific organs or functional areas. Depending on your personal situation and risk profile, different examinations may be useful. Below, we introduce the procedures we use at our prevention center in Düsseldorf to assess your health comprehensively and precisely.

This form of magnetic resonance imaging provides a comprehensive view of the entire body. All major organs and blood vessels can be visualized in a single examination. The method does not use radiation.

It enables a particularly precise assessment of breast tissue – even in dense glandular tissue where other methods can reach their limits.

Breast MRI can reveal very small changes and may make early tumor stages visible before they can be felt or detected on mammography. It can also provide valuable additional information when findings are unclear. For women with a family-related risk or for follow-up after a previous disease, it can be an important addition to individualized preventive care.

The examination provides a detailed view of the inside of the head. The brain, skull, eyes and sinuses can all be visualized in detail in a single examination. The method does not use radiation and is therefore particularly gentle for sensitive structures in the head.

Prostate cancer often grows unnoticed for a long time. Specialized multiparametric MRI of the prostate currently offers a highly detailed method for visualizing areas that may be suspicious for tumors. This is possible because it provides a very high-resolution assessment of the internal structure of the prostate.

The examination can detect changes earlier and more precisely than ultrasound or palpation and can therefore help identify disease at an early stage. In many cases, clear imaging can help avoid a biopsy.

Heart MRI enables a comprehensive assessment of the structure, function and blood supply of the heart muscle without an invasive procedure such as cardiac catheterization. It shows how the heart works, whether blood flow is even and whether scar tissue or inflammation is present.

Its high resolution provides valuable information beyond the findings of ECG or ultrasound.

Joints are complex structures made up of cartilage, ligaments, tendons and joint capsules. They are susceptible to injuries, inflammation and degenerative processes. Joint MRI enables precise visualization of soft tissues and joint structures and therefore provides a well-founded basis for diagnostics and treatment planning.

Magnetic resonance imaging can also provide high-resolution images of vertebral bodies, intervertebral discs, spinal cord, nerves and surrounding tissues. The examination can provide useful information for back pain of unclear origin, nerve irritation or degenerative disease.

Computed tomography of the lungs allows detailed examination of lung tissue, bronchi and blood vessels. It is used particularly when conventional X-rays do not provide clear results and can help assess unclear findings more reliably.

The CT scan takes only a few minutes and produces high-resolution images on which even very small changes can become visible – such as tumors, inflammation, scarring or vascular narrowing.

Thanks to the low radiation dose, modern lung CT is particularly gentle while providing highly detailed information. This can provide clarity about lung structures and possible risks – an important step for targeted preventive care and timely action.

According to the World Health Organization, around half of all cardiovascular deaths can be prevented through preventive measures. Non-invasive procedures such as whole-body angiography provide radiation-free, comprehensive imaging of the vascular system – from the base of the skull to the lower legs.
